Our Thanks - Remembrance Day Ceremony

The Municipality of Dutton Dunwich & The Royal Canadian Legion hosted An Evening of Remembrance at 7 pm on Saturday November 10th at the Dutton Community Centre. The Service was attended by approximately 240 local residents, veterans, legion comrades, cadets, service club members and business owners.

West Elgin Legion Branch Sergeant of Arms Robert White, Master of Ceremonies, led the heartfelt service with Reverend Andrew Thompson giving the Invocation and the Benediction.

MP Karen Vecchio, MPP Jeff Yurek, Warden Dave Marr and Mayor Cameron McWilliam welcomed everyone after Municipal employee Tammie Stemp, led guests in the singing of The National Anthem.

Of very special interest was Guest Speaker Blair Ferguson’s presentation which highlighted 2018 being the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War I, sharing with us stories and experiences of 3 local soldiers.

The Last Post, Lament and Rouse with Jim Patterson on the trumpet and Rob Easton on the pipes were very moving. Kiera van den Dries, newly elected Youth Advisory Council President, delivered In Flanders Fields beautifully.

This was followed by the Laying of Wreaths where impeccably uniformed Cadets from the 2884 RCACC escorted 11 dignitaries made up of federal, provincial and municipal government representatives and veteran, military, and police organizations followed by an additional 16 representatives from local service clubs, groups and businesses.

The West Elgin Community Band was a wonderful addition this year playing before and after the service, as well as during the Placing of Poppies.

Tammy Pretty, volunteer and Leader of 1st Dutton Guiding closed the Ceremony singing God Save the Queen.

The Municipality of Dutton Dunwich and The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 221, sends thanks to everyone who attended and participated in this Ceremony honouring and remembering the service and sacrifices made by our veterans and their families.

Thank you to volunteers Diane Purcell, Tammy Pretty, Brittany Hathaway and Counsellor Mike Hentz who provided invaluable assistance as well as to Municipal Staff who worked diligently to make this event possible.  PHOTOS
