Care and Maintenance |
Care and Maintenance (formerly Perpetual Care) funds were established by the Province of Ontario in 1926 as a requirement for cemeteries, as a means of having income to maintain the cemetery once the sale of plots was exhausted. In 1991, Care and Maintenance was also added on the sale of monuments and markers. Owners of plots sold previously were given an opportunity to pay a one-time fee to be put in the fund. The capital of these funds is not used. The interest is used to maintain the cemetery – grounds and monuments. Today, 40% of the purchase price of a lot is put into the Care and Maintenance funds. If a non-profit cemetery in a municipality no longer has the means or volunteers to operate, it becomes the property of the municipality. The Care and Maintenance funds are transferred as well. Usually these are inadequate to operate the cemetery. For example, a Fund of $40,000 at 3% interest per year earns approximately $1200.
DONATIONS can be made to the care and maintenance fund of Fairview, Black’s or McKillop Cemeteries. A tax-deductible receipt will be issued by the Municipality. |
