Garbage Collection
Bag Limits and Bag Tags
The bag limit applies to garbage only. A bag limit was introduced in May 2019 to help reduce garbage tonnage and associated disposal costs to taxpayers.
- Residential Bag limit - 2 bags/week
- Commercial Bag limit - 15 bags/week
Bag Tags do not expire! Purchase them ahead of time so you don’t get caught without one when you need it. The cost of a tag is $2.50.
If you are unable to come in to the Municipal Office during open hours to purchase bag tags, you may leave cash or cheque (with your name and address) in the drop box at the Mary Street entrance and they will be mailed to you. (This option requires a minimum purchase of 10 tags)
Bag tags must be:
- Attached to the side of each garbage bag in excess of the 2 bag limit
- Placed so that they can be easily seen by collectors
- On bags no more than 20kgs (44lbs) in weight
Do's and Dont's

- Put your garbage and recycling at the curb by 7:00am but no earlier than 6:00pm the night before
- Use plastic garbage bags
- Maximum weight for bags and blue boxes is 20kgs (44lbs)
- Rinse out containers before putting them in the blue box - residue left in them can attract animals, bees and wasps posing a health and safety risk to drivers
- Break down cardboard to no larger than 2’x2’ and tie into bundles if possible
- Ensure your recyclables are separated into paper and containers - containers include anything that can hold a liquid (i.e. Tim Hortons cups)

- Don’t put broken glass and sharp metal objects in regular garbage - place in a sealed and clearly labelled cardboard box for garbage collectors. This will contain the glass if it breaks at collection
- Don’t place needles in the garbage - contact the local pharmacy for a biohazard container or visit the health units website for safe disposal information.
- These materials will not be collected curbside:
- scrap metal i.e., propane tanks, BBQs, bike frames
- construction materials i.e., drywall, wood
- appliances i.e. fridges, stoves, microwaves
- electronics i.e. TVs, monitors, computers
- loose garbage, tires, CFL light bulbs and tubes
- furniture of any kind
- Don’t place garbage bags and blue boxes on top of snow banks - clear an area in the snow or leave them in your driveway to prevent them from falling onto the roadway
